Second Wind Fund - Teen Suicide Prevention

Your community. Your kids.

Welcome to the Second Wind Fund. We hope that you find the information included in our website to be helpful. Use the links above to learn more about suicide prevention and Second Wind. Please feel free to contact us with any questions, concerns, or to get involved.

The mission of the Second Wind Fund is to decrease the incidence of teen suicide by removing financial and social barriers to treatment for at-risk youth.

When a school counselor deems a student at-risk for suicide and the student has inadequate mental health insurance, Second Wind pays licensed, private therapists, with expertise in working with teens at-risk for suicide and who work at reduced rates, to provide counseling services for the student.

Second Wind was formed after four teen suicides in a Jefferson County, Colorado high school during the 2001-2002 school year. It is now accessible to every youth 19 and under in the Denver metro area (Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Jefferson, and Park counties) and through our affiliates in Boulder, Douglas, El Paso, Mesa, and Teller counties. Referrals are normally made through school counselors, whether at public, private, charter, or choice schools, although youth being home-schooled or no longer attending school are also eligible.

Colorado consistently has one of the highest suicide rates in the country. With mental health insurance and access to services dwindling, the need for Second Wind will likely -unfortunately- continue to grow.

If you are in a crisis

If you are having suicidal thoughts, feel you may hurt yourself, or are concerned that someone you know may be in danger of hurting himself or herself, you may:

1) Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at
800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255);

2) Call the National Hopeline Network at 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433);

3) If Spanish-speaking, call the Kristin Brooks Hope Center Spanish suicide support line at 1-800 SUICIDA (1-800-784-2432);

4) Call the Comitis Center hotline at 303-343-9890; or

5) In an emergency, call 911.

No hotline is a substitute for professional counseling. If you are depressed or thinking about hurting yourself, we strongly recommend that you seek counseling from a mental health professional.
